As I was walking home today, I had to cross Bethel Avenue which is the main thoroughfare before I get to campus. I realized that, over the years, I've gotten very good at judging the distance of oncoming traffic and just when to cross the street. (See, being a college town, jaywalking isn't frowned upon)
I also realized that if you're a pirate and/or you only have one good eye, you're relegated to always crossing at a crosswalk. Thankfully, I don't have to wear an eye patch.
This honing of my distance-judging skills was much more prevalent a few years ago before they re-did the main street through campus. When I was a freshman, it was always more life-threatening to cross the street because there wasn't this nifty little median to help you across.
Let me see if I can illustrate my point.
See that beautiful median? That wasn't always there... so imagine having to rush across that road with traffic coming at you from both directions.Yeah, scary. But, at least I feel better about my going to New York or something. I won't have to yell, "I'm WALKIN' HERE!" to some cab driver.
